We were joined today by Ben and his team from 5 Star Fisheries to net Clobryn Pool, with the goal to thin down the silver fish numbers, and as result, help our summer dissolved oxygen levels. After the first sweep of the Pool it was clear that we didn't have as big a problem with silver fish as we thought. It seems that we had a bigger problem with Cormorants helping themselves to our stock, and low natural food levels effecting fish growth and their general wellbeing. Many roach came out with nasty beak marks; if we did have a problem with silver fish numbers then the cormorants had already helped to significantly thin them out.
There was a clear strong silt smell when the net came out and Ben commented that many of the fish looked underweight and undersized for their age. The phrase "The fish are surviving not thriving" perfectly summing up the findings and feel of the day. We were advised with it being prime cormorant season to put the silvers back into the pool; this would give the cormorants some easy pickings instead of going after the larger fish species. We also spent the day hanging ropes with streamers across the lake to deter the cormorants from entering the water. These will stay up until the Spring when the offending winter visiting birds move on.
It was clear there was no need to do a second sweep of the pool, we had all the information we needed. Ben advised us to not add any more fish into the water but to improve the water quality and habitat to 'grow-on' the existing fish we have and before long we could see a marked difference in the size and quality of the fish. To do this he offered some multi stage advice.
Start a feeding programme for the fish to feed them up and help them thrive. Plant some reed cover in the margins in the Spring so the fish can hide away from any cormorants that do make it through our new deterrents. These reeds are much more effective than lily pads as the birds can easily swim through the thin lily stems. To add Siltex to the Pool in the Spring to combat the silt problem, which in turn should promote more natural food for the fish, which in turn could help reduce the need for feeding them ourselves as much in the future.
The committee are currently researching the options and suppliers for the above measures, getting extra advice and weighing up the costs involved before acting on the above. But a big thank you to Ben and his team for coming all that way and for their advice. And a big thankyou to Steve, Mike, Billy, the 2 Chris's, Phill and Rob for coming to lend a hand put up the streamers. Below are a few pictures from the day. - Gaz
A beautiful sunny Autumn Day and a bursting varied prize table was the perfect backdrop to a great day's fishing at the first annual LLanddulas Angling Club Gudgeon Charity Match. It was a fun but frustrating day where landing F1's and Mirrors that would usually be celebrated, were annoyingly getting in the way of Gudgeon catching time.
7 anglers took part with a total of 40 Gudgeon caught. Mike Jones landed 11 of those securing the Golden Gudgeon Trophy and the 2024 Gudgeon Master title, as well as 2024 Gudgeon Master Cwrt y Llyn quill float and my Mum's legendary apple cake . 2nd place went to Rob Massey and 3rd to myself.
Connor, our youngest angler at the age of 12, did a grand job winning the youth division and having the first pick at the prize table, at his first ever match after only picking up a rod a month ago. Great work Connor!
Over £450 was raised for Ty Gobaith, making over £1,000 raised overall by the club this year (total to be confirmed in the coming weeks). Mike Jones will pick the charity for next year's event and be responsible for baking the next cake.
I'm sure the anglers involved will agree that it is was great fun and something different. Hopefully we will get even more of those pegs filled next year.
If you want to play more of an active part in how Llanddulas Angling Club is run we are in need of more committee members, especially committee members without an actual official role within the club.
The whole club is run by volunteers giving up their own free time so we all have somewhere great to fish.
If interested, please email us on: llanddulasanglingclub@gmail.com
Those who put their name forward, if seconded, may be voted on to the committee. Thank you.
The club has recently undergone significant changes in its key positions. The new holders of these roles are still familiarizing themselves with their responsibilities. We aim to update the website more frequently with current information. We ask for your patience as we work on organizing the club's activities moving forward.
Match trophies for last year were presented with the overall winner being Kevin Dixon...well done Kev!
Work Party: Saturday 20th April
We have a big chipper coming around 12ish, as well as a couple of lads who will safely operate it. Our job is to bring all the stuff that needs chipping from the areas we have left it to the car park. A lot of work but, as they say, many hands...
Notice Board
As part of the updating of signage at Clobryn Pool the notice board now contains a whiteboard which will contain information regarding club events such as work parties and club meetings. In addition there is a reminder that the rules must be followed at all times, there is no need to specify the rules as each member is presente ed with them every year.
Health and Safety
When the new committee commences on April 1st 2024 it is expected that a member will be designated as Health and Safety officer for both club waters. Until then we will continue to practice good intentions in this important aspect of management. Full risk assessments are carried out and logged for every work party and it is expected that members take responsibility by adopting suitable clothing and footwear for these events. If any member has questions or suggestions regarding health and safety these can be presented either at club meetings, through our Facebook page, or by email to a committee member.
Angling Trust
From January 2024 the club is a full member of the Angling Trust UK. As well as a host of benefits specific to our sport the membership includes insurance geared towards fishing. This is a good move and it is worth having a look at their website to see what is available.
This was the last meeting undertaken by the previous committee. Many thanks to Russell Evans for his work as Secretary, Dave Thomas as Chairperson and Cheryl Thomas as Membership Secretary.
New members of the committee were formally voted in. Steve Bland as Chairperson and Laurence Titchener as Membership Secretary. Together with Kevin Dixon as Match Secretary and Mike Parker as Treasurer this is sufficient to conduct the business of the club under the present consitution.
Other business attended to at the meeting:
Day tickets to be retained, however, these are to be increased to £8 per session with immediate effect. It was also proposed that the club look into other methods of accepting payment for day tickets, such as PayPal or member tickets.
Monthly meetings at the British Legion cost the club around £100 pe year. It was proposed that these be significantly reduced, and that alternatives - such as Skype - be looked into as methods for conducting member meetings.
The yearly treasurers report was presented. Any member who would like a copy will be sent one through email request to Mike Parker.
Carrying on with the solid progress of clearing the sides and back of Clobryn pool. We still have a few more small shrubs and trees to drop, also still a fair amount of debris to burn. We had a fire last time and that worked well, same again this time. Hopefully we will clear the corner around pegs 8-9 with the intention to replicate the lily corner on peg 1.
First work party of 2024
Carrying on with the path renovation project, usual time 9am at Clobryn...we need a good chainsaw and operative please!
Health and Safety
From 2024 the club has in place a Health and Safety policy. Mainly this is for activites such as work parties, but it does apply to general safe fishing practice. Hopefully soon we will have a designated individual to manage this aspect of the club but, for now, informtion such as risk assesment and handbooks can be viewed on our Facebook page.
The consultation work party on Saturday 14th October was very productive. It is agreed that the work should commence as a matter of urgency and will greatly improve the fishing experience at Clobryn Pool. The scheme of work will be as follows.
1) Work parties to clear the bank from the aerator through to peg 8. Russ and Josh have kindly committed to operating the chainsaws as there will be small trees that are a risk and need to be removed. The first work party will be Saturday 28th October 9am and we need all the assistance we can get. Even if you can only commit to an hour every bit of help is imprtant.
2) Full costing of materials and machine hire.
3) Closure of pool for approximately one week while the work takes place. This is expected to be in the early new year.
8 November 2023. Over the last week there have been instances of individuals fishing with tackle banned on our fishery. Also, unbelievably, day ticketers fishing without landing nets. Needless to say this will not be tolerated and steps will be taken to rectify this.
Day tickets can now be purchased from two outlets. Geoff's tackle shop in Rhyl and Premier Stores, Gadlas Rd. Llysfaen. Can we remind anglers that ignorance of the club rules is not an acceptable excuse. Also, illegal fishing is a police matter, and with our new cctv equipment all instances will be reported.
A recent case in Stafford saw an individual fined £433 pounds for fishing without a license. Can we again point out that no one is allowed on our fisheries without a valid day ticket or membership, this is in addition to a current Environment Agency rod license.
Following the meeting on October 8 2023 the club has decided to implement a programme of fry management ourselves. The first stage of this is to buy a net of suitable quality to enable us to do this long term. This should be in place early in the new year and, with the help of our diving friends, a first thinning will be soon after this. Not only will this be of major benefit to the water quality at Clobryn, but also it will help the decent size fish to get even bigger and fitter...tight lines!
Water quality is integral to fish welfare and this year the club purchased and situated a solar powered aeration system. This has proven extremely beneficial to the water and is a great long term investment.
For many years Clobryn Pool has had a problem with excess fish stock. This impacts on fishing by 1) inhibiting growth of optimum stock 2) seriously depleting oxygenation 3) nuisance bites when fishing. It was agreed at the club meeting in October that a suitable Seine net be purchased in order for us to manage the situation long term. However, a net from an established UK supplier is very expensive which - in addition to the ongoing path renovation - would seriously dent the finances. An alternative would be to purchase one from abroad (usually China or The Maldives) which has its own drawbacks.
As a trial measure the club has agreed to introduce keepnet use for members when fishing. This is for small silver fish only (approx the length of a middle finger) and members are free to choose whether to participate or not. Obviously, once a session has finished the excess fish need to be disposed of. By week commencing 11.12.2023, a designated area will be assigned where this can be safely done.
It would be useful if members could log approximately how many fish per session were culled. This can be as simple as taking a quick photo or a rough count, and then passing the information to a comittee member.
As with all net usage, hygiene is very important and, as we do not have dipping facility available, it is the responsibility of members to ensure nets are kept as clean as possible.
After consultation with Nrw and a specialist fishery management company we can legally manage the bio-mass of our fish. However, this needs to be done humanely.
The match on 16th July was a charity event on behalf of the Lifeboat service which raised a commendable £498. The winning weight - well done Titch! - was 38lb 11oz, second was Kevin Dixon with 24lb 6oz and third Andy Warburton with 12lb 9oz.The cheque was presented on 8.7.23 at Llandudno station, in attendance from Llanddulas anglers were Kevin Dixon, Mike Jones and Mike Parker.
